End Table

The latest addition to my living room. Same deal as the bookshelves, I am trying to furnish my apartment by building as much as possible. I don’t have access to a real deal wood shop , So I have been trying to build simple (i.e. somewhat easy to build) focusing on the few good tool I have easy access too.

The end-table design was based on a small resin sculpture I built two years ago while in grad school. The body is solid walnut and the legs are maple. The size of the body was dictated by the size of the largest board I could find at the lumber yard, without access to a plainer I felt it would be difficult to join boards and make them look nice, luckily I was able to find a board large enough so that the end-table will accept magazines. Also in the interest of keeping things simple and easy to build the legs are attached to the outside box and  simply glued and doweled in place, the front legs are angled to give it a little extra spice .  The end product is sturdy and does a good job supporting a glass of scotch.

  1. Sure makes that glass of scotch look extra tasty…
Hearing about and seeing your furniture really makes me want to have my own place. You are really making it (the furniture and the apartment) your own and that seems extremely appealing.
I like how the little and big creatures hang out together. The piece itself is just what you said- simple – but for me still has a good deal of interest in its uniqueness and detailing. It really looks nice. Good work!

  2. I think what has inspired you was the New Robber you made for Catan, (reh reh reh).
    Haha, kidding,
This end table is very mature in design. It also looks very good with your couch. It looks fragile, in a good way. The one pin in the back, and the angled leg with 2 pins. The feet you placed on it are a good detail that makes it look more than home made. Without the feet and the pins, I think it wouldn’t look as mature, but its a good example of how little details can go along way.
