Color Studies

I was asked to help my boss do some color studies of an existing space, she wanted the ability to see the colors how they would be in the space and the ability to quickly change colors in the image until she found the ones she liked. I traced photos in CAD using mostly the spline command, and then made them live paint groups in illustrator, and set up the colors on swatches so they could be quickly and easily changed. Produced some kind of weird images.

  1. Wow,
These are really awesome. They do have this very weird feel to them. It reminds me of a cartoon of some kind. I really want to see a cartoon guy in them, I think you should add some figures to these images, using the same process to complete them. or a dog…. yeah…. (kurt style) My favorite image is the first one. because the photo you traced is not straight.
I would have never thought to go about this study by tracing the photos in cad then making them live paint. but the result is fantastic. If i were doing this study I would have just done it in sketchup. but what would have been lost are all the little details that make this image realistic, but so unrealistic, such as the hinges on the door and light switches.
Were they helpful to the bosses at all, or were they like… weird… haha.

  2. haha, yeah… It’s like a weird dream, right? These are really cool. I totally agree with Pat, a good squiggle person or two would really help to complete them in a fun way. Behind the desk… going up the stairs… suspended from the ceiling maybe? Jack Smith dolls on the counters…
