Car Photography 101

As a Top Gear Fan, I always took a liking to the Dacia Brand, (cue James May)

When we went to Iceland, I knew I wanted to rent a 4×4 car, and found Lava Car rentals. They offered a Dacia Duster, the bigger 4×4 cousin of the sandero, so of course I had to rent it. The price was great too!

I fell in love with the little no frills Duster. It was an amazing car with lots of little quirks. You can tell this is a car built for the cold climate.

I have been looking at a lot of car photography these days and have been trying to dissect what makes certain photos better than others when it comes to car photography.

1) Use a telephoto and zoom in as far as you can. Try and flatten out the car a little.

2) Shoot the car low. Try and see all 4 tires.

3) Blur that background! make sure its epic or unique.

Here is a quick test. which shots are best?

Since I loved the Dacia Duster so much, I gave it a proper photo shoot in Iceland, it’s natural habitat.

Courtney got a kick out of me taking photos.

Here they are.

Okay, So Iceland’s backdrop helped a little.

I was really happy with the shots, and loved the car so much I emailed them to our rental company.

They Seemed to like them too!

  1. These are really fun and that Iceland background makes them look pretty epic. Did you do any post processing? What are you using to do post processing on photos these days?

  2. Yeah, I rocked the Zissou hat all over iceland, it was most appropriate.
Not much post processing in the photos. Since everything is shot in raw, I utilized the sliders in PS raw to adjust for color balance, and exposure. At times, when you push those sliders the photo can get really grainy. So after adjusting the raw image, I’ll use the Topaz noise reduction filter. After that I threw on a photo pop with Topaz adjust and called it good.
So the smoothing to reduce grain, but you could lose a little bit of crispness, and then the pop to bring back some of those details. That’s about it. I used my restraint to not add a lens flare to photo 2 with the headlights. haha.
